The Thousand Nights and One Night
by David Walser (Author)
Jan Pieńkowski (Illustrator)
This wonderful collection of eastern tales is based upon the 19th century English translation by Sir Richard Burton, and includes favourites such as Aladdin, Sinbad and Ali Baba. Both Walser and Pien´kowski have travelled extensively, and wanted to bring to the book a real sense of the many lands referenced within the narrative. Pien´ kowski’s illustrations are breathtaking. Black and silver silhouettes are displayed on marbleised backgrounds of outstanding colour and detail. Saffron, midnight-blue, deep-purple and neonpink combine in one image of an Arabian night sky, whilst the shocking slaughter of an unfaithful wife and her lover by her husband, the Shah, is conveyed in greens and blues, and bordered by the signs of the zodiac in inked silver. Walser’s style is a mixture of the simple and the exotic, a perfect match for Pien´ kowski’s illustrations. The pair previously collaborated on a collection of fairy tales, and Pien´ kowski has twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal. This book has broad appeal; the stories abound with romance, magic and adventure while the illustrations are a delight to behold. Age: 8+
