The Littlest Dragon

by Margaret Ryan (Author)
Jamie Smith (Illustrator)

The ‘Roaring Good Reads’ series is aimed at early readers – those just beginning to read as well as more confident readers. They include short stories and chapter books. Pictures on every page support the earliest readers. Titles for the more confident ones feature longer sentences and fewer illustrations.

The Littlest Dragon contains two short stories featuring Number Ten, the youngest dragon in a family of ten. The first of these stories, reminiscent of Ten in the Bed, recruits the reader immediately in to the narrative. Squashed by his brothers, Number Ten has a series of highly entertaining ideas to ensure that he gets to sleep comfortably. None of them works – until he tries a little reverse psychology! The second story sees him left behind without any football gear as his brothers head off to the match. Comforting him with cookies, his mum unwittingly helps him find a way to turn the tables on his brothers. This is a charming story with a very endearing protagonist. Lots of narrative fun and interesting word play add to its appeal. Jamie Smith’s black and white drawings capture the humour in the text and support characterisation.
